Evidence of neolithic agricultural communities have been found in China dating back to as far as 5000 BC. From 1500 BC to 1000 BC , the Shang dynasty ruled much of northern China. Over the next 3000 years, China would be ruled by a series of waring kingdoms and dynasties. They expanded Chinese culture and influence all over what we know refer to as modern day China.
During the 19th century rebellions plagued the country leaving millions dead. In addition to the internal uprisings, foreign countries such as Great Britain , Japan , and Russia had gained political influence as well as economic control over parts of China. On January 1, 1912 China became a rebublic following an uprising led by Dr. Sun Yat-sen.
From 1894 to 1945, China was involved in a series of conflicts with Japan. In 1895 China ceded Korea, Taiwan, and other areas to Japan. In 1931 Japan seized the Northeastern Provinces of China (Manchuria) and set up the puppet state of Manchkuo. In 1937 Japan invaded the rest of China. After Japan's surrender to the United States, Japan was ordered to return all of the occupied areas of China back to the Chinese.
Following the Second World War, internal conflicts broke out between the Kuomintang and Communist forces. The Kuomintang were defeated and moved their government to Taiwan on December 8 , 1949. The People's Republic of China was proclaimed in Peking September 21, 1949. Mao Tse-tung was chosen as its Head of State.
On February 15 1950 China and Russia signed a friendship and aid treaty, but by the 1960's relations were deteriotating over issues concerning the leadership of world communism, ideology, and the agreement over borders. Russia cut off its aid.
On December 25, 1971 the UN General Assembly removed the seat of Taiwan from the United Nations General Assembly and seated the People's Republic of China in its place. The United States had supported the inclusion of China, but had opposed the exclusion of Taiwan.
On February 21-28 1971 United States president Richard Nixon visited China. On December 15 1978 The People's Republic of China was officially recognized by the United States of America as the sole legal government of China. Diplomatic relations were established on January 1 1979.
